Playwriting

Picture
From being a four year finalist in the New Voices Playwriting Festival to receiving honorable mention for the Norma Jean Yembreck Playwriting Award at SUNY Oswego, Kimberly has explored both dramatic and comedic writing while familiarizing herself with various writing styles. Some of her favorite playwrights include Sam Shepard, Martin McDonagh and Neil Simon. Kimberly is most known for using her playwriting pieces to explore human relationships, whether romantically, diabolically or just some good old mom and daughter dialogue.

"Method" (2014)

This one-act play is scheduled to receive a staged reading as part of Colonial Little Theatre's New Play Festival in May in Johnstown, NY.
WALTER: Then this may be a stupid question, but why did you do it?
OLIVIA: It’s complicated.
WALTER: I’m going to need a little bit more than that.
OLIVIA: I didn’t know it was going to be this hard. I read the script and I thought, “This will be great, she’s complex and emotional and finally I’ll get to use all those stupid exercises my acting professor made us do in college”. But when rehearsals started I just couldn’t get it. I was saying the words and crossing upstage and downstage, but it was all so…empty. It was all right there in front of me and I just couldn’t figure out how to get a hold on it.
WALTER: You slept with Nolan to help you pull off some character in front of a bunch of strangers?
OLIVIA: It wasn’t me, Walt. It was her. She needed to know what it felt like to be near him.
WALTER :So I can go sleep with anyone I want as long as I’m following a script?

"Oh, Life" (2010)

Picture
Below you'll find a link to the ten-minute play "Oh, Life", which was her New Voices finalist piece in 2010. It compares the interactions of contemporary genders when they find themselves in a complicated situation that what was meant to be a harmless dinner party. Kimberly intended for this piece to examine both the faults of men and women when it comes to modern dating while equally making fun of both parties in the process.
